Iittala Gaissa

Highball 38cl 2pcs

Design genius Tapio Wirkkala is considered the father of modern Finnish industrial art. In his illustrious career, both glass and nature held a special place for him. Wirkkala combined those loves with Gaissa. Inspired by the eternal ice of the Gaissa Mountains, Wirkkala worked with the Iittala glassblowers to capture the fluidity of water and ice in his Gaissa collection. The rocky bottoms and thin walls of the drinkware reflect ice formations and flowing water. The mouthblown, classical glassware combines Nordic design with clarity and function. The Gaissa highball set has a solid base and perfect balance making it smooth to hold and handle. Ideal for serving cocktails. Mouthblown in Finland.

Gaissa

Gaissa was designed by Tapio Wirkkala in 1973. The mouth blown, classical barware is available in three sizes. The glasses have rocky bottoms and thin walls that reflect the lucid qualities of ice. Wirkkala's derived much of his design inspiration from nature such as ice formations and the way water flows. Gaissa embodies the powerful impact of the arctic climate on Wirkkala’s aesthetic.

Iittala's designer Tapio Wirkkala

Tapio Wirkkala

Tapio Wirkkala (1915-1985) was a multitalented design genius, widely considered a leading figure of modern Finnish industrial art. Wirkkala's wide ranging portfolio spans from glass, furniture and product design to sculpture, city planning, art, graphics and even creating banknotes for the Finnish treasury. As his reputation grew internationally, Wirkala exhibited throughout the world but he was a recluse by nature. His favorite place was a spot so remote within the deep woodlands of middle Finland that helicopters delivered prototypes to his hut since no car could reach him. It was in nature that he found his much loved solitude and the inspiration for forms that industry could produce or artwork could create. Throughout his incredibly productive career, Wirkkala received numerous awards including three gold medals at the Milan Triennale, the Lunning Prize, Pro Finlandia Medal and the Prince Eugen Medal. Wirkkala has designed a range of home products for Iittala with his Chanterelle, Gaissa, Ultima Thule and Tapio Collections.
