The Birds by Toikka collection combines Oiva Toikka's love for nature and passion for glass art. Each bird in the collection is mouthblown and handcrafted at the Iittala Glass Factory, making them unique down to the smallest detail. The collection embodies a rich fusion of glassmaking traditions and Toikka's hands-on approach with his team. He usually worked in the hot shop, in direct contact with the master glassblowers first at Nuutajärvi Glass Factory. The Butler is among the most loved birds in the collection, as he brings cordial charm with his stylish dinner jacket and tails, prominent beak and a sleek tuft of hair. A unique filigree technique on the body carries a stripe effect and a decorative detail. Limited 2023 piece numbered edition.

Birds by Toikka

Oiva Toikka (1931-2019) is one of the greatest names in Finnish design. His iconic collection of Birds by Toikka first took flight back in 1972 at the Nuutajärvi glass factory with the creation of his small glass Flycatchers. Since then hundreds of new birds have joined the flock. The collection embodies a rich fusion of glassmaking traditions and would not have been possible without Toikka’s hands-on-approach at the glassworks and his keen understanding of each employee’s skills. Today, each glass bird is handcrafted and mouthblown at the Iittala Glass Factory.

Oiva Toikka

Oiva Toikka (1931-2019) is one of the great personas of Finnish glass design. His imaginative, rich and bold glass art is a departure from mainstream Nordic design. Toikka’s individual style is also evident in the utility objects he creates as they often deviate from the traditional clean-lined puritanism of Finnish design aesthetics. In addition to glass, his artistic activities cover staging, fashion design and plastic interior design elements.

Toikka has designed a range of home products for Iittala with his Annual Cube, Birds by Toikka, Frutta, Flora, Kastehelmi, Oiva Toikka Collection and Tundra Collections.
